Arena Lynx are proud to present Mary Coughlan for an intimate concert in the famous Abbey Tavern Howth on Friday 30th September.
Mary Coughlan has many fans including Morrissey who recently attended one of her Dublin shows.
Coughlan debut album Tired and Emotional, sold an unexpected 100,000 copies in Ireland, partly due to a memorable appearance on The Late Late Show. Despite her ongoing personal problems, Coughlan continued to reap praise for her recording output on WEA. On Under the Influence (1987) she revived the 1948 Peggy Lee hit "Don't Smoke in Bed''and the Billie Holiday ballad "Good Morning Heartache", as well as Christy Moore's "Ride On", which reached number 5 on the Irish pop charts in 1987. 1988 was another successful year for Coughlan, she made her acting debut in Neil Jordan's High Spirits, and released her third studio album Ancient Rain. Despite her success, Coughlan lost her record contract with Warner Music Group.
However, in 1990, she signed up with East West Records and released her fourth album Uncertain Pleasures , recorded in the UK and produced by Peter Glenister, former musical director for Terence Trent D'Arby. It included new compositions by Mark Nevin (Fairground Attraction) and Bob Geldof as well as covers of the Rolling Stones "Mother's Little Helper" and Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel". After receiving treatment for her personal problems, it seemed as though Coughlan had landed on her two feet once again. Sentimental Killer (1992) and Love for Sale (1993) were received well. In 1994, Coughlan lent her vocals to the hugely popular A Woman's Heart Vol.2 album, along with the likes of Mary Black and Dolores Keane. Coughlan released her first live album, Live in Galway, and released another studio album in 1997, After the Fall, which became her American debut.
In June 2000, Coughlan took another turn in her career when she presented a series of elaborate multimedia shows in Dublin and in London celebrating Billie Holiday, a singer whose life story had parallels to Coughlan's own. The best of these shows was collected on the Mary Coughlan Sings Billie Holiday album. A new studio album was released the following April 2001, entitled Long Honeymoon, and another in 2002, Red Blues. The 2000s saw the release of numerous Coughlan compilation albums and her appearance on the RTE's reality charity show, Celebrity Farm. The release of her most recent offering in 2008, The House of Ill Repute, sparked reviews that suggested it was her best yet. She has also taken part in the Sanctuary album with Moya Brennan.
She recently released her autobiography entitled "Bloody Mary".
Tickets are priced at €20 and are available from The Abbey Tavern Bar. This will be a memorable concert to see Mary Coughlan is such intimate surroundings and early booking is advisable.

After the successful opening to The Stage Comedy Club @ the Abbey Tavern, Howth, we now present you with the line up for our second comedy show on Friday Oct 16th 2009. It will be headlined by Dermot Whelan with John Lynn and Steve Cummins as m.c. for the night.
Dermot Whelan burst on to the comedy scene late in 2004. In his first year, he has performed at the Kilkenny Cat's Laugh Festival, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and, more recently, at Vicar Street in the Liffey Laughs for RTE television. He was also shortlisted for the BBC New Comedy Awards.
Dermot hosts a weekday breakfast show on the hugely successful Dublin radio station 98FM. He has recently released a comedy album which has reached no. 2 in the Irish Album Charts with double platinum status.
Dermot is best known for his regular appearances on RTE's hit show The Panel and has performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Other TV appearances include One Night Stand-Up for BBC TV. His comedy creation, the Toll Trolls, have had 3 top ten albums and went double platinum.
John Lynn is fast becoming one of the most sought after acts in the country. John's easy going laid back delivery makes him an instant hit with audiences. Within months of starting stand up John appeared on TV screens in RTE's Liffey Laugh's, a remarkable feat for a newcomer. In the past couple of years he's appeared on the BBC's One Night Stand and was a highlight alongside Tommy Tiernan & Jon Kenny on TV3's The Third Policeman's Ball, celebrating the work of Flann O'Brien.
He completed his first full Edinburgh festival run in 2006. He is the first choice as an opening act for Naked Camera's PJ Gallagher, and has since performed in almost every comedy venue around Ireland.
Steve Cummins has performed in every major venue throughout Ireland and has performed at the Edinburgh festival. He is a regular contributor to Hot Press magazine and other publications. Prior to turning professional, Steve spent the previous fifteen years working with the homeless, juvenile offenders and adolescent gang members from the Projects in Chicago. Pull on your laughter boots and get yourself down to the first "House of Fun Comedy Night" at The Stage (Abbey Tavern, Howth). The brain-child of comedian, Joe Rooney, the House of Fun Comedy night is a new feature on the Howth social scene from September 09. Joe will act as MC on the night do some of his wonderful skits and songs, and will introduce some of Ireland's top comedic talent to town. As barfly Timmy from "Killinaskully" Joe has become one of Ireland's most popular "luadars" and the butt of many of Dan Clancy's (Pat Short) jokes.
He is also remembered as the rebel priest, Father Damo, in "Father Ted" who uttered the memorable line, "Who do you prefer, Blur or Oasis?"
Colum McDonnell is a hobbit child trapped inside the body of a short Irishman. Naturally with this sort of outward beauty, he became a comedian so as to mock those less fortunate, with their ample height and lack of body fat. Colum was a finalist in the BBC newcomers and Channel 4's 'So You think You're Funny?', going on to appear all over Ireland including Vicar Street, The Electric Picnic, The Kilkenny Cat Laughs and he has just returned from the Edinburgh Festival. He has charmed TV audiences on RTE's "Podge and Rodge", "The Liffey Laughs" and RTE2's "The Unbelievable Truth", so with his tales of magpies, trains and sinking ships, you will be sure to laugh your pants off.
House of Fun includes Dubliner Shazwanda, aka Sharyn Hayden, who is currently a huge hit on the Dublin circuit with her Anti-recession song, observations and wacky take on life, such as 'the recession is an excuse for chancers to be even bigger chancers', hitting home with her audience.
And last but not least, the hilarious Willa White will hit town as part of the night. Willa first came to prominence in RTE's show, "Joy in The Hood", when Des Bishop ran stand-up workshops in some of the most impoverished areas of Ireland including Ballymun where White is from. Since then he has gone on to critical success, appearing at festivals and clubs all over the country.
This madcap night is a mixture of comedy, music and sketches and will take place on Saturday, 19th September 2009.
This is a late show with doors opening at 10.15pm. Show starts at 10.45pm and ends about 12.30pm with music continuing till 2am.
